Defined by IATA in DG Regulations 3.6.2.2.2.1 as "An infectious substance which is transported in a form that, when exposure to it occurs, is capable of causing permanent disability, life-threatening or fatal disease in otherwise healthy humans or animals." This is not an indication of biosafety level, but of safety as relates to shipping in a properly prepared package.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1, strain IIIB (HIV-1). Family: Retroviridae, genus: Lentivirus. Single-stranded, positive-sense enveloped RNA virus.
Purified virus made from clarified, virus infected tissue culture harvest fluids that are concentrated and cleaned of debris by a combination of ultracentrifugation, ultrafiltration and selection of viral band from a sucrose density gradient. This preparation contains live virus.
IIIB is one of the original HIV-1 isolates; it is a group M lab-adapted virus and grows very well in transformed T-cell lines. It utilizes the CXCR4 receptor. HIV-1IIIB purified virus is generally not as infectious as HIV-1IIIB direct pelleted virus (Cat. No. 10-124-000).
